This page explains how to get the best out of the Citizens' Network
Benchmarking Initiative web site, and aims to explain any difficulties you may
have experienced viewing the pages.
1. Why can’t I use some of the features of the web site?
The web site uses frames, tables, stylesheets and hotspot images to display its
information. Some of these features are not supported by older web browsers, and
so if you are experiencing problems viewing the web site you might like to
download a more up-to-date browser. The main browsers used at the moment are
Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer - click on a link below for
more information:
Download Netscape Navigator

Microsoft Internet Explorer
2. How can I open PDF files (Adobe Acrobat Reader)?
Some of the documents provided on the web site are not easily converted into the
internet's native format, HTML. In order to preserve the quality of these
documents, we have supplied them in Portable Document Format (PDF). In order to
read PDF files, you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or above, a
copy of which can be obtained from http://www.adobe.com
/prodindex /acrobat /readstep.html. Instructions on how to download this
utility are provided on Adobe's web site.
3. Am I looking at the most up-to-date pages on the web site?
Another commonly experienced problem is that of caching. Many web browsers keep
hold of a copy of pages you have visited, so that when you return to the page it
can be loaded from your hard disk and displayed quickly. This means that if the
page has changed since you last looked at it, the browser may not show the most
up-to-date copy of the page. As the Citizens' Network Benchmarking Initiative
site is frequently updated, therefore, it is possible that you may not always be
looking at the most up-to-date copy of a page.
There are two solutions to this problem:
- You can use your browser's "reload" or "refresh" function
to force the most recent page to be displayed. This option is recommended for
people viewing the site over a modem link.
- You can set your browser so that it always checks for new pages. This is done
through the "Preferences" command of the "Edit" menu in
Netscape, or through the "Options" command of the "View"
menu in Internet Explorer.
4. When I click on "Contact", why do I get an error message?
To use this e-mail link, you must have an e-mail application set up as the
default for your browser (e.g. Outlook Express configured for use with Internet
Explorer, or Netscape Communicator).
